Donuts + banh mí Vietnamese sandwiches are two of my favorite things and I'm so glad latte express delivers both fantastically!!
Got the #1 sandwich 3 days in a row and there might be a 4th and 5th day. The bread really makes or breaks a good banh mi!! $7 for a soft and toasty baguette filled with goodness in SF is pretty good. I recommend the grilled pork for first timers. If your taste buds allow I'm a fan of the ham + pate. You'll have room for a donut too. For larger appetites probably two.
Thanks to the Asian ladies behind the counter for putting up with solicitors to serve quick + satisfying food. This isn't the safest neighborhood & a short walk from union square! -

This was once my top 3 banh mi spot, but sadly it has fallen off my radar....for now.
Latte Express is located in the heart of downtown/soma. It's pretty much a mom & pop shop that is very affordable for lunch ($6-7 for a sandwich).
I usually go with the combination. Prior to my last experience, I really liked their sandwiches. The bread was crispy, the meat was fresh, jalapeños were a good kick, and the ingredients blended well. However, this last experience, bread was way too soft, the pate overpowered the entire taste and sandwich, there was a bit more of sourness than usual in the sandwich.
I probably will come back within the next few weeks, and hopefully that'll lead to me updating my review for the better.
PS this review is a bit biased towards how Latte express was before. If you're looking for average and affordable sandwich in the super expensive downtown, this place is still a good option! -

I usually go to Latte Express for Vietnamese sandwiches because they're just a short walk from the office. If there also happens to be a jackpot for PowerBall or Mega Millions, I'll buy a lotto ticket here too.
Sandwiches are on the pricier side so expect to pay a little more for a combination ham + steam pork banh mi (#7). They're quick and the sandwiches are toasted. Portion wise they're on par with most banh mi places in the area. One time they gave me a petite baguette which was probably an off day for them on bread deliveries.
Bonus points for taking credit cards although sometimes I wonder if they're charging me for extra jalapenos. It depends on who rings me up I think because my credit card receipts show small differences (under $0.50) each time. -

This is probably the most reasonably priced breakfast spots in the area with seating. The breakfast sandwiches and coffee come out hot and fresh, so what more can you ask for?

Terrible service. The prices keeps going up. They raised their prices 3x in less than a year. Meanwhile the size of their donuts are decreasing.
Give me a break and stop being greedy.
The Vietnamese sandwiches are terrible. The servers do not even speak Vietnamese. Go one block down to 6th & Mission and you can get an authentic and better tasting Vietnamese sandwich at Miss Saigon.
As a regular who spends on average $20 a week or over $1,000 annually, I won't be coming back.
High prices coupled with terrible service and diminished quantity equates to no value.
Stop being greedy!!!
